Knoxville Volunteer Opportunities

Opportunities to serve are varied and include making a home for a new refugee family in anticipation of their arrival, preparing their first meal that they will eat in America, meeting them as they first get off the plane, and assisting staff with administrative tasks.

We have many volunteer opportunities for individuals, families, and groups. Many of our projects are appropriate for families with children.

We could not do what we do without your help.

    5. Welcome—start serving!!

While serving:

Opportunities
Apartment Furnisher/Mover
Time Commitment: This a 2-3 hour commitment between 9-5, M-F, timing varies, but usually in the morning.

  • Before new clients arrive, their apartments need to be set up with household items and furniture to ease their transition and help them feel at home.  We need volunteers to move furniture into apartments for refugee families who will arrive within the week. This position requires heavy lifting.
Shoppers
Time Commitment: 1-2 hours at your own discretion within a day or two before arrival of new refugees.

Volunteers go shopping for food and household items needed for each refugee family. Volunteers are given a list and check to purchase a Walmart gift card, and can shop on their own.

Transportation/Appointment Assistant
Time Commitment: This is done on an appointment basis between 9-5, M-F. Time needed varies.

Clients will be access resources necessary to resettlement so that they can begin the process of making a life in their new communities. The volunteer drives the refugee to appointments and helps the refugee navigate the appointment to a successful end.

ESL Tutor/Helpers
Time Commitment: Tutors are asked to schedule an hour a week at time good for both them and the client. 

Clients will feel more proficient in the language, which in turn will lead to higher employment and/or educational success. Tutors meet with a refugee once a week for an hour or two to support the teaching of the English language. We ask that tutors make a six-month commitment for each refugee they tutor.

Events Planning and Recreation:
Time Commitment: Varies with each project.

Volunteers will take refugees around town to acquaint them with Knoxville and all things that it has to offer. They will also plan events to bring the refugee community together such as parties, days at the lake, etc.

Community Involvement and Engagement (Fundraise and Advocate)
Time Commitment: Varies with each project.

Volunteers will help our new friends get connected to various networks and organizations, where they can help out and also find help.

General Office Worker
Time Commitment: Varies to your schedule during regular business M-F.

Volunteers can be a receptionist, sort donations, train staff and volunteers, and many other office tasks.
